An important quality of any ladder is it's overall stiffness. A lack of stiffness can point to other problems such as loose rung/stile joints. However, when checking GRP or fibreglass ladders you shouldn't confuse the springy nature of fibreglass stiles with a lack of stiffness. You are actually looking for excessive 'slop' or movement between the stiles and rungs, often accompanied by a creaking or squeaking sound.
